How to Manage Payment Methods in Point of Sale in Odoo 18 (Enterprise)

Managing payment methods efficiently is one of the most important parts of running a retail business. Odoo 18 (Enterprise) makes this process simple, flexible and fully customizable through the Point of Sale (POS) module. Whether your store accepts cash, card, UPI, wallet payments or custom methods, Odoo allows you to configure them all from a single place.

1. Access the Point of Sale Configuration

  •   To get started:
  •   Go to: Point of Sale → Configuration → Payment Methods

  •   Here, you will see a list of all existing payment methods such as Cash, Bank and more.

2. Creating a New Payment Method

To add a new payment type:

  1. Click Create.

  2. Enter a Payment Method Name (e.g., UPI, Card Machine, Wallet, PayTM).

  3. Choose a Journal that will store accounting entries.

  4. Select the Payment Method Type:

  • Cash – For physical cash handling

  • Bank – For card payments, online payments

  • POS Payment Terminal – For integrated terminals

  • Custom – For wallet/UPI or any special case

  •  You can create as many payment methods as your business requires.

3. Assign Payment Methods to a POS Session

  •  Even after creating payment methods, you must enable them for your specific POS.
  •  Go to: Point of Sale → Configuration → Point of Sale

  •  Select your POS → Payment Methods section.
  •   Check the payment methods you want enabled at the counter.

Example:
✔ Cash
✔ Card
✔ UPI

  •   Click Save.

4. Using Payment Methods in a Live POS Session

Once your payment methods are set up:

  1. Start a new POS session.

  2. During checkout, you will see all active payment methods.

  3. Choose the appropriate payment method to complete the sale.

The POS automatically records:

  • Amount received

  • Journal entries

  • Payment split (if multiple methods are used)

5. Closing the POS Session

When ending the session:

  • Review payment totals per method

  • Validate cash control

  • Confirm the closing balance

  • Post accounting entries

Odoo 18 generates all required reports automatically.
